What Does Genesis 45:10 Mean?
Verse-by-verse commentary and theological analysis
Genesis 45:10 Commentary
"You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children's children, and your flocks, your herds, and all that you have." Joseph specifies the location: Goshen. The land of Goshen is a fertile region in the eastern Nile Delta: good land for the shepherds and their flocks, separate from the Egyptian cultural center in ways that will preserve the family's distinct identity. Goshen is both geographically suitable (for the shepherding family's animals and lifestyle) and politically manageable (near enough to Joseph in the capital to maintain the protection and proximity Joseph promises).
"Near me": the location of the family is explicitly tied to proximity with Joseph. He is not settling them in a remote corner of Egypt; he is settling them near the seat of power where he can protect and provide for them. The "near me" reverses the twenty-two-year separation: the brother who was separated from his family in the pit will have his family near him in Egypt. The son who was separated from his father by his brothers' sale will live in the land while his father is near him in Goshen.
The comprehensiveness of the invitation: "you and your children and your children's children, and your flocks, your herds, and all that you have": includes three generations and all their material goods. Joseph is not inviting Jacob personally to a retirement arrangement; he is receiving the whole family with everything they own for the duration of the famine and beyond. This comprehensive invitation is the beginning of the Genesis-to-Exodus transition: Jacob's family goes down to Egypt complete, and it will come out generations later as a nation.
