Genesis 44:26 Commentary

"We said, 'We cannot go down. If our youngest brother goes with us, then we will go down. For we cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us.'" Judah retells the brothers' response to Jacob's "go again" command: the explanation of the condition that made the trip impossible without Benjamin. "We cannot go down" without him; "we cannot see the man's face" without him. The blocking condition was not the brothers' preference but the official's requirement, which the brothers faithfully communicated to their father when he commanded another trip.

The repetition of the condition in the appeal is part of building the complete picture for the official: the brothers were caught between the official's "no Benjamin, no audience" and the father's "no Benjamin away from me." The brothers were the messengers of contradictory requirements from two authorities, trying to navigate an impossible situation. They did not have the freedom to simply comply with whichever authority was more convenient; they were responsible to both and needed to find the path that honored both.

"For we cannot see the man's face unless our youngest brother is with us": this exact phrasing is Judah telling the official (who is the man) what the brothers have been telling their father: your requirement is what creates the crisis. The official demanded Benjamin; the father cannot release Benjamin; the brothers are in between. Judah is completing the account of the triangle of competing authorities and obligations before arriving at the human reality that makes the current situation so desperate.
