Genesis 44:25 Commentary
"And when our father said, 'Go again, buy us a little food,'" Genesis 43:2 is being retold in Judah's speech. Jacob's command "go again, buy us a little food": the command that triggered the whole negotiation over Benjamin in Genesis 43: is the next piece of the account. The father's command for more grain is presented in its simplest form: the man who controls access to food was the one who sent them back to Egypt. Jacob did not send them back voluntarily in the sense of wanting to comply with the official's conditions; he sent them back because the household's survival required it. The grain ran out; the head of household commanded the only available response: go again.
Judah's retelling of the father's command is the account of the household's decision structure. Jacob commanded: his sons did not independently decide to return; the patriarch sent them. The sons then had to explain why "go again" could not be executed without first resolving the Benjamin question. The dialogue between Judah and Jacob in Genesis 43:3 to 9 is compressed here into the background of "when our father said, 'go again.'" The full story of Judah's pledge, the argument about delay, and Jacob's eventual reluctant decision is behind this one verse but is assumed by it.
The inclusion of this element in the appeal is part of the complete historical argument Judah is constructing: no one in this story acted frivolously or recklessly. The father commanded; the brothers complied with the conditions of the command; the journey was made under the weight of the father's grief and Judah's personal guarantee. The official is being asked to understand the full human cost of the decision structure before making the decision about Benjamin's fate.
