Genesis 44:20 Commentary
"And we said to my lord, 'We have a father, an old man, and a young child of his old age. His brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother's children, and his father loves him.'" Judah retells the brothers' answer to the official's interrogation: including the family details that set up Benjamin's significance. "An old man": Jacob's advanced age is the first characterization, establishing that the father is vulnerable and near the end of his life. "A young child of his old age": Benjamin's position as the last child of Jacob's later years, the child born after the decades of labor in Paddan-Aram.
"His brother is dead": the brothers told the official that one son "is no more" (Genesis 42:13); Judah now states this more plainly in the retelling: Joseph is dead (in their belief). Benjamin is "alone" left of his mother's children: the only surviving son of Rachel. And "his father loves him": Judah names the father's love for Benjamin directly, which is the key to understanding why the father's response to Benjamin's loss would be catastrophic. The love that Jacob bore for Rachel's sons is the foundation of what the family's response to Benjamin's loss would be.
The mention of "his father loves him" in Judah's speech is remarkable: it is the same favoritism pattern that in Genesis 37 drove the brothers' resentment of Joseph. Their father loved Joseph; now their father loves Benjamin. In Genesis 37, the loved son's favored status was a source of resentment that produced the sale. In Genesis 44, Judah uses the loved son's favored status as the ground of the appeal: precisely because the father loves him, losing him would kill the father. The same favoritism pattern that was a source of conflict in Genesis 37 is now the ground of Judah's case for mercy.
