Genesis 44:19 Commentary
"My lord asked his servants, saying, 'Do you have a father or a brother?'" Judah begins the history of the family's interactions with the official from the beginning: from the initial interrogation in Egypt, when the official questioned them about their family. The speech is structured as a complete account of the situation, starting from the first exchange in Genesis 42 and moving through to the present moment. Judah is not repeating what the official already knows; he is building the emotional and moral context for the appeal he will make at the speech's conclusion.
"Do you have a father or a brother?": the questions the official asked in Genesis 42 are now retold in Judah's voice. The official's initial interrogation produced the family disclosure that set the whole test in motion. Judah is tracing the chain of events from the origin: the official asked; we answered truthfully; the situation unfolded from there. The retelling of the official's questions in the appeal is also the implicit argument that the brothers' situation is a result of answering honestly: which they were told would identify them as "honest men."
The formal structure of Judah's speech: beginning at the beginning, tracing the history sequentially: is the structure of a legal appeal: a full account of the situation, presented in order, to establish context before the appeal. Judah is not leaping to the emotional climax; he is laying the foundation carefully. The speech will move from the initial interrogation (v.19) through the family disclosure (v.20) through the test conditions (vv.21 to 23) through the father's response (vv.24 to 27) through the journey terms (vv.28 to 31) to the offer itself (vv.32 to 34). Each step is necessary for the full picture.
