Genesis 44:11 Commentary

Then each man quickly lowered his sack to the ground, and each man opened his sack. The search begins immediately and without resistance. The brothers quickly lower their sacks and open them: no hesitation, no objection, no request to consult with each other. The speed of compliance reflects their complete confidence in the search's outcome. They have nothing to hide; they opened their sacks at the same speed they opened their mouths to swear the oath in verse 9. The rapid, cooperative opening of all eleven sacks is the behavior of men who know they did not do what they are accused of doing.

The "each man" repetition: "each man quickly," "each man opened": individualizes the search. Every sack, every brother, every load. The search is comprehensive; no sack is skipped or only partially inspected. The thoroughness of the search is necessary for the test: when the cup is found in Benjamin's sack, there can be no question that every other sack was fully inspected and found empty. The discovery of the cup in the youngest's sack will be unambiguous because all the other sacks were transparently empty.

The quickly lowered sacks are also the brothers' final moment of confidence before their world changes. They are moving with the ease of the innocent, certain that the search will vindicate them. The moment after they have all opened and before the search reaches Benjamin's sack is the last moment of their confidence. The cup will be found; the confidence will shatter; the question of whether they will abandon Benjamin or stay will dominate the rest of the chapter.
