What Does Genesis 43:19 Mean?

Genesis 43:19 Commentary
So they went up to the steward of Joseph's house and spoke with him at the door of the house. The brothers do not wait to be confronted; they approach the steward proactively at the entrance of the house, before being brought inside. This is the behavior of men who know they have something to account for and who prefer to address it directly rather than have it discovered under worse circumstances. The approach to the steward is an act of preemptive honesty: a decision to disclose the silver matter before it is raised against them: which is itself evidence of the moral change the text is charting in the brothers over Genesis 42 to 43.
The steward of Joseph's house is the household administrator: the person responsible for the management of the prime minister's private residence. He is the right person to address about a money transaction that occurred through the official grain exchange. By approaching the steward rather than waiting for the official (Joseph) himself to confront them, the brothers are choosing transparency over strategy. They could have waited to see if the silver was even noticed; instead they proactively disclose it. This preemptive honesty is the "honest men" of Genesis 42:11 being lived out in behavior.
"At the door of the house": the location is the threshold between outside and inside, between the brothers' vulnerable position arriving at an unfamiliar official's home and the protected interior where the feast is being prepared. Their approach to the steward at this liminal point is the conversation that needs to happen before they can safely enter. They are addressing their anxiety and their guilty conscience at the threshold, trying to create clarity before the full encounter with the official inside.
