Genesis 42:35 Commentary

As they emptied their sacks, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack. And when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid. The full silver discovery happens when the sacks are emptied at home in front of Jacob. One brother found his silver at the lodging place (v.27); now all the sacks are emptied and every man's bundle of money is present. The silver was returned to all nine brothers. The individual discovery on the road becomes a household crisis in front of the patriarch: not one mistake but nine, not one sack but all of them, not private terror but shared family alarm.

"They and their father saw their bundles of money": Jacob sees it too. His sons' fear is now his fear. The silver that Joseph secretly placed in the sacks as an act of kindness is received as an omen of doom by everyone who sees it. The household that has been living under the grief of Joseph's loss for over twenty years is now confronted with silver in sacks that has no legitimate explanation, one son imprisoned in Egypt, and a demand for the youngest son to travel there. The silver is the last element of a cascade of frightening news that the brothers' return has brought.

"They were afraid": the fear is shared between all the brothers and their father. The collective fear is the household's response to what looks like an inescapable trap being set around them by an incomprehensible foreign power. From their perspective, they went to Egypt to buy grain, were accused of espionage, had a brother imprisoned, are being required to produce their youngest, and now find that the money they paid was returned: which should be good news but in context feels like further evidence of something hostile and supernatural closing around them. Joseph's kindness is experienced as divine threat because they cannot see Joseph's hand behind it.
