And he fell asleep and dreamed a second time. And behold, seven ears of grain, plump and good, were growing on one stalk. Pharaoh's second dream shifts from cattle to grain: from the pastoral world to the agricultural world: but maintains the same numerical structure: seven and seven, abundance followed by scarcity. Seven plump ears of grain on a single stalk is an image of extraordinary agricultural productivity. One stalk producing seven ears concentrated all of its energy into multiple heads of grain; this is the agricultural imagination of maximum yield per plant, a field of such plants representing a legendary harvest.

The shift in dream imagery from cattle to grain also shifts the economic reference: cattle represent the pastoral wealth of an agricultural society, while grain is the staple food: the stored excess that feeds populations through lean seasons. By repeating the message in both cattle and grain imagery, the dream communicates about both the pastoral economy and the food supply. The upcoming period of abundance and famine is not limited to one sector of Egypt's economy; it will affect the comprehensive food system. Joseph's response in his interpretation (storing grain in cities: v.35) addresses the grain dimension directly.

The second dream coming immediately after the first, on the same night, creates the interpretive situation of verse 8: Pharaoh is troubled because he has had two vivid dreams that seem connected but whose meaning he cannot determine. The professional Egyptian interpreters in verse 8 cannot explain them. The double dreaming: two different images, same structure, same night: is the repetition that Joseph will identify as divine confirmation in verse 32 ("the doubling of Pharaoh's dream means that the thing is fixed by God"). The second dream's plump grain ears are the second half of the message whose first half was the fat cows.
