Genesis 41:42 Commentary
Then Pharaoh took his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph's hand, and clothed him in garments of fine linen and put a gold chain about his neck. Three physical acts constitute the formal investiture of Joseph's appointment: the signet ring, the fine linen garments, and the gold chain. Each item is a specific symbol of the authority being transferred. The signet ring: Pharaoh's own, taken from his own hand: is the symbolic instrument of executive power; what the signet seals, Pharaoh authorizes. Joseph, wearing Pharaoh's signet ring, can act and document in the name of Pharaoh himself.
The fine linen garments are the Egyptian court dress that replaces the prison clothing Joseph wore when he was brought up from the pit. The last time a garment was transferred in Joseph's story, it was the garment seized by Potiphar's wife that became the evidence of his false imprisonment. Now garments are given by Pharaoh: not stripped away as evidence of disgrace but bestowed as the visible marks of honor and court membership. The garment pattern that runs through Joseph's story: the robe of Genesis 37, the prison garment of Genesis 39, the court linen of Genesis 41: traces the full descent and ascent: beloved son's robe, slave's garment, prisoner's clothing, prime minister's court linen.
The gold chain is the final external marker of seniority and honor. In Egyptian court iconography and practice, gold necklaces and collars were given to high officials as marks of royal favor and status. Joseph's gold chain is the public, visible signal of his new status: worn around the neck where all who see him will recognize the Mark of royal appointment. Together, the ring, the linen, and the gold chain transform the appearance of a recently-released prisoner into the recognizable external form of an Egyptian chief minister. The investiture is as much about visibility and social recognition as about legal authority.
