"A young Hebrew was there with us, a servant of the captain of the guard. When we told him, he interpreted our dreams to us, giving an interpretation to each man according to his dream." The cupbearer's description of Joseph uses three identifying markers: young, Hebrew, servant of the captain of the guard. He does not use Joseph's name: perhaps he does not know it, or perhaps it was not salient in his memory compared to these identifying details. What matters for locating Joseph is his status and location: a Hebrew servant in the captain's prison. That is specific enough for Pharaoh to dispatch and retrieve him.

The description of Joseph's interpretive work: "giving an interpretation to each man according to his dream": captures the crucial feature of his performance: he did not give a generic interpretation but a specific one for each dreamer. The cupbearer and baker, dreaming on the same night with different dream content, received different interpretations appropriate to their different dreams. The individualized accuracy, the "according to his dream" fidelity, is what makes Joseph's ability relevant to Pharaoh's situation. His is not a one-size-fits-all interpretive system; he reads what each dream communicates and provides the reading specific to that communication.

The cupbearer's recommendation is implicit rather than explicit: he does not say "you should send for him"; he tells the story and lets the conclusion form itself in Pharaoh's mind. The logic is evident: Egypt's wise men have failed; a young Hebrew in the captain's prison succeeded with the cupbearer's and baker's dreams; Pharaoh now has a similar need.
