Genesis 39:4 Commentary

So Joseph found favor in his sight and attended him, and he made him overseer of his house and put him in charge of all that he had. The elevation from purchased slave to household overseer follows directly from Potiphar's recognition of the LORD's blessing in verse 3. "Found favor in his sight" is the covenant vocabulary of divine-human mediation: the same phrase used when Noah found favor with God (Genesis 6:8) and when Moses asks God to show him his favor (Exodus 33:13). Joseph's favor with Potiphar is specifically human preference; it is the social expression of the divine blessing that preceded it.

The role of overseer: a word that in Hebrew connotes supervisory authority, active management, standing over and directing: gave Joseph comprehensive authority over Potiphar's household operations. He was not given a specific task but put "in charge of all that he had." This is the first of three elevations Joseph will experience: overseer of Potiphar's household (v.4), overseer of the prison (v.22), overseer of all Egypt (Genesis 41:41). Each elevation is total within its domain. Each is preceded by disaster or descent. The pattern of Joseph's life is defined by this rhythm: descent followed by elevation, each elevation greater than the last.

Attending Potiphar: the personal attendant role implied in verse 4: placed Joseph in proximity to power. It is the same position that Joseph's son Manasseh will later take in Israel's household hierarchy: the trusted personal attendant who oversees the master's affairs. The personal proximity was not a distraction from the administrative role; it was the context that made the administrative role possible. Potiphar needed to trust Joseph enough to give him comprehensive oversight, and that trust required the daily evidence of personal interaction. Potiphar trusted Joseph completely: verse 6 will say he "left all that he had in Joseph's charge" without any reservation or supervision.
