Genesis 36:42 Commentary

The next three territorial chiefs are Kenaz, Teman, and Mibzar. Kenaz has completed a transition through three forms in this chapter: a son of Eliphaz (v.11), a genealogical chief descended from Eliphaz (v.15), and now a territorial designation in the final chiefs list. The Kenizzites, the people bearing this name, appear in Genesis 15:19 among the nations whose land God promised to Abraham. Caleb the spy is called a Kenizzite in Numbers 32:12 and Joshua 14:6, suggesting some Kenizzite clans were absorbed into the tribe of Judah before the conquest of Canaan.

Teman completes the same trajectory: from son (v.11) to genealogical chief (v.15) to territorial region. As a region, Teman is associated throughout prophetic literature with Edomite wisdom and military strength. Jeremiah 49:7 asks "Is wisdom no more in Teman?" Obadiah 1:9 threatens "your warriors shall be dismayed, O Teman." Habakkuk 3:3 places God's theophanic approach from "Teman" in a hymn situating the divine presence in the southeastern wilderness. The prominence of Teman in later prophetic geography confirms that the name established in Esau's genealogy became the dominant Edomite region in subsequent centuries.

Mibzar means "fortification" or "stronghold" and appears only in this verse and the parallel in 1 Chronicles 1:53. Its name suggests a naturally or artificially fortified settlement in Edom's rugged highland terrain. Iron Age archaeological sites in the Edomite region do include evidence of ridge-top fortified settlements, and Mibzar's name may preserve the memory of one such stronghold. The name's absence from prophetic texts citing Edomite cities may reflect its importance in an earlier period before other cities became more politically prominent in the written record.
