Genesis 36:24 Commentary

The sons of Zibeon were Aiah and Anah. The verse then attaches a clarifying parenthesis to Anah: "he is the Anah who found the hot springs in the wilderness, as he pastured the donkeys of Zibeon his father." Anah son of Zibeon is identified as the father of Oholibamah, Esau's wife (v.2, v.25), making his story genealogically important. The hot springs discovery is the only narrative event inserted into the otherwise list-structured genealogy of the Horite section. That a single deed received this special notation suggests it was remembered as remarkable.

The Hebrew word for "hot springs" (yemim) is uncertain and has been translated diversely: hot springs, mules (a hybrid animal), or even "water sources." The LXX (Greek translation) reads "Jamin, a mule" and some ancient interpreters understood Anah as the discoverer of the mule, a hybrid bred from Horse and Donkey. If this reading is correct, the verse records the first instance of an agricultural innovation that would reshape ancient transportation and warfare. Whatever Anah found, the account marks him as a figure who distinguished himself through discovery in the ordinary work of herding.

The pastoral setting is significant: Anah was pasturing his father's donkeys in the wilderness when he made his discovery. The mundane activity of animal-tending as the setting for a notable find echoes other biblical moments: Moses encountered the burning bush while herding Jethro's flock (Exodus 3:1-2), and young David was watching Sheep when Samuel anointed him (1 Samuel 16:11). The genealogy honors Anah's discovery by attaching it to his name, preserving memory of a man's work in the kind of textual detail that usually belongs only to the covenant line's heroes.
