Genesis 35:11 Commentary

And God said to him, "I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come from your own body." The divine self-identification "I am God Almighty" (El Shaddai) is the same name God used when giving Abraham the covenant of circumcision (Genesis 17:1). El Shaddai is the divine name associated with covenant initiation and expansion in the patriarchal narratives. Using it at the Bethel reaffirmation places Jacob's covenant within the Abrahamic framework explicitly.

The command "be fruitful and multiply" is the creation mandate of Genesis 1:28, applied first to all humanity at the beginning and now focused through the covenant line specifically. What God intended for all humanity at creation is carried forward through the covenant family. The genealogy in verses 22-26 will list the twelve sons who are the beginning of that fruitfulness fulfillment, and the nation they each generate will carry the creation mandate in its identity as the covenant bearer for all peoples.

"A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings from your body" develops the fruitfulness promise in three directions: a singular nation (Israel), a company of nations (the broader family of related peoples), and royal lineage (Kings descended from Jacob). All three find fulfillment at different points: Israel as the covenant nation, the related nations, and eventually the Davidic kings from the tribe of Judah, culminating in the king whose throne is promised to be eternal (2 Samuel 7:16).
