Genesis 34:31 Commentary

And Jacob set up a pillar of stone in the place where he had spoken with him, a pillar of stone. And he poured a drink offering on it and poured oil on it. Jacob set up the stone and named the place where God had spoken with him Bethel. The stone pillar and the ritual acts (drink offering and oil) repeat and complete the original Bethel ritual of Genesis 28:18, where Jacob set up a stone and poured oil on it. The completion of the ritual at the return fulfills the original act: what was begun in flight is completed in return. The stone anointed with oil at departure is now anointed again with oil and drink at the return.

The drink offering (nesek) is the liquid offering poured at the base of an altar or stone as an act of worship; it does not appear in the earlier Bethel account but is added here as part of the fuller cultic act that Jacob's matured faith performs. The addition of the drink offering to the oil-anointing marks the development of Jacob's worship practice across twenty-two years. The young man who poured oil on a stone in fear and wonder now pours both oil and drink in mature covenant action.

The naming of the place Bethel at the end of the verse completes the covenant geography: the place God first named as his house (Genesis 28:17: "this is the house of God") is now officially named by Jacob. Both the theophany and the human response, stone, oil, drink offering, and name, are complete. The Bethel account is closed: Jacob's vow has been fulfilled, the covenant has been reaffirmed, and the place that will be one of Israel's central worship sites for centuries has received its permanent name from the patriarch who was transformed there.
