Genesis 34:13 Commentary

"Only on this condition will we agree with you: that you will become as we are by every male among you being circumcised. Then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters to ourselves, and we will live with you and become one people." The sons' counter-proposal proposes a universal circumcision of all Shechemite males as the condition for integration. "Every male among you being circumcised" makes the covenant sign the prerequisite for the proposed intermarriage and integration. The proposal sounds like a genuine integration requirement; it is a tactical maneuver.

The promise of full integration, "give our daughters, take your daughters, live with you, become one people," repeats and matches Hamor's offer back to him. The symmetry of the offers (Hamor proposed integration; the sons propose integration with an additional condition) makes the sons' proposal appear as a reasonable quid pro quo rather than a tactical trap. The deceit works because it presents a coherent and plausible negotiating position.

"Become one people" is the assimilationist language Hamor used in verse 9 turned back on the Shechemites. The sons are apparently agreeing to Hamor's vision of integration while adding the circumcision condition. From Hamor and Shechem's perspective, they are getting what they asked for; from the sons' perspective, the agreement is the setup for the massacre of verse 25. The gap between what is said and what is planned is the structure of the deceit.
