Genesis 30:39 Commentary

And the flocks mated in front of the sticks and brought forth striped, speckled, and spotted young. The confirmation of the outcome: the flock in Jacob's care is producing abnormally colored offspring. The verse states the result plainly, without evaluating the mechanism. The sticks were placed; the animals mated in view of them; the offspring came out with the patterns Jacob needed. The straightforward narration of cause and outcome presents Jacob's strategy as effective, whatever the actual genetic mechanism behind it.

The striped, speckled, and spotted offspring are Jacob's wages by the agreement of verse 32. Each such animal that is born adds to Jacob's holdings. The accumulation that began with the small initial group of abnormally colored animals (given to Laban's sons at the separation) grows through natural increase plus the increased proportion of abnormal offspring produced by Jacob's breeding management. Over the six years of this arrangement, Jacob could accumulate a substantial herd.

The outcome of verses 37-39 is presented as the fulfillment of Jacob's strategy before verses 40-42 reveal its more sophisticated aspect: the selective use of the sticks with only the stronger animals. The order of presentation moves from the general strategy (sticks at watering places) to the specific refinement (selective exposure), allowing the reader to understand the basic approach before learning its more advanced form. Jacob's pastoral intelligence is displayed systematically.
