Genesis 30:27 Commentary
But Laban said to him, "If I have found favor in your sight, I have learned by divination that the Lord has blessed me because of you." Laban's response begins with the politeness formula "if I have found favor," indicating a request coming. His acknowledgment that he has divined (nachash, practiced divination) that God blessed him through Jacob is a frank admission from an outsider that YHWH's blessing on Jacob was the real source of Laban's prosperity. Laban's divination practices reflect his identity as a man from outside the covenant community who uses his own means to read divine signs.
The acknowledgment that "the Lord has blessed me because of you" echoes Genesis 12:3: "in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." Laban is one of those families. The blessing that God promised Abraham to extend through his line to all the earth's families is visible here in concrete form: a Paddan-Aram shepherd's flocks have grown because God was with Jacob. Laban's divination, whatever its spiritual validity, has told him something theologically true: Jacob was the channel of blessing.
Laban's admission also serves his negotiating purpose: it explains why he wants Jacob to stay. He is not being generous; he is being strategic. Having acknowledged that Jacob is the source of his blessing, he can reasonably argue that losing Jacob is losing the blessing. The counter-request in verse 28 follows naturally: name your wages, because I want to keep you. Laban's theological observation serves his economic interest.
