Genesis 26:4 Commentary
"I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because Abraham obeyed me and kept my requirements, my commands, my decrees and my instructions." The reason given for extending the promise to Isaac is Abraham's obedience. The covenant is not extended to the son because of the son's merit but because of the father's faithfulness. The obedience of one generation creates the covenant capital on which the next generation draws.
The comprehensive description of Abraham's obedience, "my requirements, my commands, my decrees and my instructions", covers every category of divine directive. He kept all of it. The same servant who had "done everything I required" in chapter 24:7 is here described in the fullest terms of covenant faithfulness. The patriarch who left Ur, offered Isaac at Moriah, and swore the servant under the thigh kept the complete covenant across every test it brought.
The New Testament's presentation of Jesus as the one who "fulfilled all righteousness" (Matthew 3:15) and "was obedient to death" (Philippians 2:8) places him in the line of the obedient patriarch, and beyond it. Abraham's obedience made him the source of blessing for his descendants; Jesus's obedience makes him the source of righteousness for all who are in him. The pattern of obedience generating generational covenant benefit is taken to its ultimate form in the perfect obedience of the last Adam.
