Genesis 26:2 Commentary
The Lord appeared to Isaac and said: "Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live. Stay in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you." The divine appearance to Isaac at the moment of famine pressure is the covenant heir's direct revelation. The first divine command to Isaac after Abraham's death is a geographical prohibition: not Egypt but this land. The covenant heir must learn to trust the word over the visible circumstances.
The promise "I will be with you and will bless you" is the covenant's address to the second-generation heir directly, specifically as an inheritance from Abraham. Each generation of the covenant must receive the promise in its own moment of testing. The same God who blessed Abraham stands in the famine and declares his intention to bless Isaac in the same land if he stays. The covenant requires each generation's own act of trust.
