Genesis 25:7 Commentary

Ishmael lived a hundred and thirty-seven years. He breathed his last and died, and he was gathered to his people. His descendants settled in the area from Havilah to Shur, near the eastern border of Egypt, as you go toward Asshur. And they lived in hostility toward all the tribes related to them. Ishmael's death at 137 years is recorded with the same formulaic dignity given to the patriarchs of Genesis 5: he breathed his last; he was gathered to his people. The man whose birth caused division and whose expulsion caused grief died at a full age, having established twelve clans that filled the region. His life was not diminished by his exclusion from the covenant line.

The territorial description traces the Arabian Peninsula and the desert regions east of Egypt, the biblical world's mapping of the Ishmaelite range. The same Havilah appears in Genesis 2 in the garden's river system; Ishmael's descendants inhabit the edges of the created world that frame the covenant land. The borders placed on their territory in this verse are the borders within which a significant portion of subsequent biblical history will take place.

The phrase "they lived in hostility toward all the tribes related to them" closes the Ishmaelite section with the fulfillment of the angel's words in chapter 16:12: "he will live in hostility toward all his brothers." The prediction made before Ishmael's birth found its historical expression in the tribal map of his descendants. The angel at Beer Lahai Roi saw the shape of these descendants' lives before Ishmael was born. The fulfillment of that specific prediction is the narrative's evidence of divine foreknowledge operating in human history.
