Genesis 25:5 Commentary

After Abraham's death, God blessed his son Isaac, and Isaac lived near Beer Lahai Roi. After the patriarch's death, the covenant's continuation requires explicit divine action. God blessed Isaac: the same verb spoken over Adam and Eve at creation, over Noah after the flood, and over Abraham throughout his story. The blessing is given specifically to the covenant heir after the patriarch's death, declaring that the covenant descends, not dissolves.

Beer Lahai Roi, "the well of one who lives and sees me", is the place where God appeared to Hagar in distress and where Ishmael was sustained after his expulsion. That Isaac lives near this well suggests an attentiveness to the full presence of God in the land, not only at the established patriarchal sites. He settles near the place associated with the excluded and the suffering, a small but telling detail about the covenant heir's character.

The covenant blessing given to Isaac after Abraham's death is the chapter's declaration that the covenant has successfully transferred to the next generation. What was promised to Abraham, "I will bless you", descends to Isaac through death. Hebrews 9:15 presents the new covenant in the same terms: "because a death has taken place, those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance." The pattern of blessing descending through death is the patriarchal form of the principle the cross embodies.
