Genesis 19:12 Commentary

The two men said to Lot, "Do you have anyone else here, sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here." The divine command to Lot is the most urgent word he has received: do you have anyone else? Get them out. The investigation of Sodom is complete; the judgment announced in chapter 18 is about to be executed; the question of the righteous within the city is now a rescue operation. The Angels who have been investigating are now evacuating the one they found.

The question "Do you have anyone else here?" is the covenant's comprehensive reach toward all within the protective sphere of the one righteous person. The angels are not extracting Lot alone; they are seeking everyone who belongs to him within the city. The covenant's protection extends from the patriarch to all within his household, which is the same structure that determined who received the circumcision in chapter 17 and who was protected in the Passover in Exodus 12. The righteous head's covenant standing covers those within his sphere of responsibility.

The urgency of the command, "Get them out of here," is the urgency of a divine judgment that has been determined and will not be delayed. The time for intercession is over; Abraham has already interceded; the threshold of ten righteous has not been met; the angels are now in evacuation mode rather than investigation mode. The same God who engaged Abraham's intercession in chapter 18 is now executing judgment in chapter 19 with the same justice that the intercession sought to invoke: the righteous are being removed before the destruction falls on the wicked. The Justice of all the earth is doing right.
