Genesis 14:13 Commentary
During the night Abram divided his men to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus. The battle strategy is a nighttime raid with divided forces, a classic ancient military tactic for a smaller force attacking a larger, encumbered enemy. The eastern coalition, loaded with captives and plunder from several defeated peoples, was a slower-moving force than Abram's 318 trained men. A night attack with a divided force (classic pincer or distraction-and-assault tactics) would have been effective against a column of troops slowed by the management of prisoners and goods.
The pursuit beyond the battle, as far north as Hobah north of Damascus, demonstrates the decisiveness of the rout. Abram did not simply inflict a tactical defeat; he pursued the fleeing forces far enough to prevent any regrouping and counter-attack. The pursuit to Damascus is approximately 200 miles from the Salt Sea region, a remarkable extension of the operation. By the time the chase was ended, the eastern coalition was far beyond any possibility of returning for the captured goods or prisoners in the near term.
The military success of Abram against the eastern coalition that had just defeated five cities and multiple surrounding peoples is the action of a man acting on genuine faith in the covenant command: protect your family, trust the one who called you. The same God who promised Abram all the land he could see and as many descendants as dust also provided him with 318 trained men and the tactical judgment to use them effectively against a numerically superior force. The rescue of Lot is the first military miracle of the patriarchal narrative, achieved through real human action directed by real covenant confidence.
