Genesis 13:2 Commentary

Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold. The wealth Abram exits Egypt with is the fruit of the deception executed in chapter 12. The text records it without comment: he is very wealthy in livestock, silver, and gold. The three categories represent the full spectrum of ancient wealth: productive animals, currency, and portable valuables. What was gained through a morally compromised plan has become the material foundation of the household that will carry the covenant promise through the next generation.

The accumulation of livestock connects directly to the tension that will develop in this chapter: too many animals for two households in a single pastoral territory. The wealth that was God's material provision through an imperfect means will soon require a physical separation that tests the relational bond between uncle and nephew. Blessing in the form of material abundance can create exactly the kinds of practical pressures that force significant decisions. More Sheep require more land; more land requires negotiation; negotiation reveals character.

The New Testament does not treat wealth with one consistent valuation. Jesus spoke of the difficulty that wealth creates for entry into the kingdom while also telling parables in which wealth was a gift to be invested rather than buried. What Genesis presents is a consistent pattern: material provision through covenant relationship is real, but it comes with responsibilities and complications that test the faith and character of the recipient. Abram's great wealth set up the test of his generosity toward Lot that will define his character in this chapter.
