Genesis 10:24 Commentary

Arphaxad was the father of Shelah, and Shelah the father of Eber. The inner genealogy of the Shemite line now begins its narrowing march toward Abraham. Arphaxad is Shem's third son, and from him the line runs through Shelah to Eber, whose descendants the text has already identified as the reason Shem was particularly notable as an ancestor. The genealogy of chapter 5's Sethite line will be picked up again in chapter 11 in more detail; here the Table of Nations provides the stripped-down genealogical spine.

Shelah's name means "petition" or "request," which carries a resonance with the covenant theme: the line runs through those who ask of God. His father Arphaxad appears in the genealogy at a key position, three steps from Shem himself and two steps from Eber. In chapter 11, more detailed generational information will be given about these figures, including their ages at the birth of their sons and their total lifespans. Here, only the names are needed to establish the line of descent.

The genealogical chain Shem-Arphaxad-Shelah-Eber is the covenant backbone of the Table of Nations. While Japheth's descendants spread to the coastlands and Ham's built empires, this quiet domestic chain produces the line through whom God will call one man to become the father of a people, a land, and ultimately of a blessing to all the nations around them. The narrowest path in the Table of Nations carries the widest promise. Jesus, tracing His lineage through this chain to Shem and to Adam, is the one in whom the narrowing finally opens back into the universal.
