What Does Exodus 9:11 Mean?
Verse-by-verse commentary and theological analysis
Exodus 9:11 Commentary
And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils came upon the magicians and upon all the Egyptians. The boil plague effectively removes the Egyptian magicians from the narrative: they cannot stand before Moses because they themselves are covered in boils. The magicians who have been present since Exodus 7:11 to offer counter-signs now cannot function professionally: they cannot even appear before Pharaoh to attempt a response. The boils incapacitate the very people whose role was to maintain Egypt's counter-claim against divine power.
The "could not stand before Moses" is a status reversal of enormous significance: in Exodus 8:19, the magicians reported to Pharaoh that "this is the finger of God": a confession of YHWH's superiority. Now they cannot even appear in the royal court to give reports. The boils have removed them from the confrontation entirely. The people who represented Egypt's intellectual and spiritual capacity to respond to divine claims are physically unable to fulfill their role. The boil plague eliminates the institutional counter-claim infrastructure of Egypt.
The observation that the boils came "upon all the Egyptians" via the magicians' incapacitation note is the final confirmation that the plague is universal in Egypt: even the specialists who tried to counter the plagues are afflicted by the sixth one. The magicians' affliction is both the death of Egyptian counter-claims and a personal embodiment of the plague's complete reach. After Exodus 9:11, the Pharaoh-Moses confrontation loses the institutional mediation that the magicians provided: Pharaoh faces Moses without the buffer of his religious-intellectual advisors. Their absence will shape the negotiations that follow.
