What Does Exodus 6:24 Mean?
Verse-by-verse commentary and theological analysis
Exodus 6:24 Commentary
The sons of Korah: Assir, Elkanah, and Abiasaph; these are the clans of the Korahites. Despite Korah's future rebellion and death (Numbers 16), his sons survived and became the founders of a significant Levitical sub-clan, the Korahites. Numbers 26:11 explicitly notes: "the sons of Korah did not die." The Korahite survival despite their father's punishment is one of the Pentateuch's unexpected mercies. The father's sin of ambition and rebellion does not exterminate his line. The sons who did not rebel continue the family's Levitical service.
The Korahites are credited in the superscriptions of multiple Psalms: Psalms 42-49, 84-85, 87-88 are assigned to "the sons of Korah." These Psalms include some of the most beautiful covenant laments and temple songs in the Psalter: "As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God" (Psalm 42:1); "How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts!" (Psalm 84:1).
The sons of Korah, whose father tried to seize more than his allotted priestly role, became the poets of the longing for God's presence in the sanctuary. The irony is significant: the descendants of the man who demanded more access to the sanctuary became the ones who sang the deepest longing for it.
The survival and flourishing of Korah's sons acts as a model for the principle stated in Deuteronomy 24:16: "Fathers shall not be put to death because of their children, nor shall children be put to death because of their fathers. Each one shall be put to death for his own sin." Korah's sons did not share their father's punishment because they did not share his rebellion. The genealogy of verse 24 records their survival and legitimacy within the covenant community. The Korahite Psalms that emerged from their descendants are the covenant community's inheritance from the sons who chose differently than their father.
