Exodus 6:21 Commentary

The sons of Izhar: Korah, Nepheg, and Zichri. Izhar's sons are listed, with Korah appearing first. Korah will become the central figure in the rebellion of Numbers 16, where he, along with Dathan and Abiram and 250 leaders of the congregation, challenges the authority of Moses and Aaron: "You have gone too far!

For all in the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?" (Numbers 16:3). The rebellion will end with the earth opening to Swallow Korah and his household, and fire consuming the 250 who offered incense. The genealogy of Exodus 6:21 lists Korah without comment on his future; the reader who knows the Numbers account recognizes the name.

Korah's rebellion is a priestly jealousy dispute: Korah is a Levite (a Kohathite) who wants the priestly status reserved for Aaron's sons. He already has significant responsibility as a Kohathite clan member; his ambition is the high priestly role that belongs exclusively to Aaron's line. The rebellion is not a rejection of the covenant structure but an attempt to expand access to its highest office.

The theological problem, as Moses articulates it in Numbers 16:8-10, is that Korah's assigned role is itself a great privilege and the demand for more is ingratitude. The name Korah in the genealogy of Exodus 6 is a call that the same covenant structure that produces Moses and Aaron also produces the ambition that will challenge both.

Nepheg and Zichri, Korah's brothers, leave no significant narrative trace in the Pentateuch. Their listing alongside Korah is the genealogical precision that records all sons, not just the ones who become historically significant. The genealogy of verse 21 is not a hall of fame; it is a record of who belonged to which family, regardless of what they did. The genealogical register includes the significant figure, the known traitor-to-be, and the forgotten names with equal factual precision.
