Exodus 6:18 Commentary

The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, the years of the life of Kohath being 133 years. Kohath's four sons (Amram, Izhar, Hebron, Uzziel) will generate the major priestly and Levitical families of Israel's worship life. Amram's sons are Moses and Aaron (verse 20), the leaders of the Exodus.

Izhar's son Korah will lead the rebellion against Moses in Numbers 16, demonstrating that even within the Levitical priestly line there is a fault line of ambition and resistance. Uzziel's sons include Mishael and Elzaphan, who will carry the bodies of Nadab and Abihu out of the tabernacle after they offer unauthorized fire in Leviticus 10:4. The four sons of Kohath generate the families through which the drama of Israel's priestly life will unfold.

Kohath's lifespan of 133 years, compared to Levi's 137, Amram's 137 (verse 20), is consistent within the tradition of extended Levitical lives. The Kohathites assigned to carry the ark and the sanctuary's most sacred objects received a warning in Numbers 4:20 not to look at the holy things even for a moment "or they will die." The sanctity associated with the Kohathites ran in both directions: their proximity to the holy things was both a privilege and a danger. The genealogy of Kohath's sons in verse 18 is the genealogical foundation for that dangerous proximity.

The Kohathite clan will carry the ark through the wilderness, and the ark's dangerous holiness will be demonstrated at Uz and Beth-shemesh (Numbers 4; 1 Samuel 6:19). The Kohathites who carry it must follow exact protocols for covering it before transport; to look at the uncovered ark is lethal. The danger of the sacred in the Old Testament narrative is not symbolic but literal: the Kohathite genealogy of Exodus 6:18 is the foundation for a group whose entire identity is organized around the management of holy danger on behalf of the community.
