What Does Exodus 6:15 Mean?
Verse-by-verse commentary and theological analysis
Exodus 6:15 Commentary
The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman; these are the clans of Simeon. The sons of Simeon are listed, and one is specified by matrilineal origin: Shaul, "the son of a Canaanite woman." This maternal notation in a patrilineal genealogy draws attention to a mixed ancestry within the tribe of Simeon.
In the covenantal context, the specification of a Canaanite mother is not necessarily a Mark of disgrace but a genealogical precision that distinguishes Shaul from his full brothers who had Israelite mothers. The genealogy is careful about origins because origins matter for tribal and covenant identity.
Simeon's tribe will eventually be absorbed into Judah (the tribe of Simeon receives no independent territory in the conquest of Canaan but is allocated cities within Judah's territory in Joshua 19:1-9). The Simeon genealogy is therefore a record of a tribe whose tribal identity will diminish over time, serving here primarily as the second waypoint on the path from Reuben to Levi. The genealogy's purpose is Levi, but it observes proper order in getting there.
The sons listed for Simeon (Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar) generally match Genesis 46:10 and Numbers 26:12-14, with minor variations in some names that reflect different textual traditions or scribal variations. The consistency of the genealogical tradition across multiple biblical texts is evidence of the care with which tribal lineages were maintained in Israel's record-keeping, both for identity purposes (who belongs to which tribe) and for economic purposes (inheritance and land allocation within tribes depended on lineage).
