What Does Exodus 26:33 Mean?
Verse-by-verse commentary and theological analysis
Exodus 26:33 Commentary
The veil's placement "under the clasps" is the tabernacle's most precise spatial instruction: the inner covering's gold clasps that join the two linen-curtain sets at the fifty-loop seam are positioned directly above the veil. The veil hangs vertically exactly where the covering's joining-seam runs horizontally: the boundary between the holy place and holy of holies is marked simultaneously by the vertical veil between the pillars and the horizontal covering-seam above the veil. The boundary is doubly defined: the ceiling's seam and the floor-to-ceiling veil Mark the same sacred frontier from two perpendicular planes.
The holy of holies as the innermost ten cubits is where the ark of the testimony is positioned: "you shall put the ark of the testimony" in the holy of holies: the same ark that holds the tablets of Moses' testimony (chapter 25). The veil's placement establishes the ark's location: everything from the veil to the west end wall is the holy of holies, and the ark with its mercy seat occupies the center of that sacred space. The veil-specification and the ark-placement are connected specifications: the dividing curtain and the object it guards are defined in relation to each other, both essential elements of the covenant's innermost sacred zone.
The veil separating holy of holies from holy place is the covenant's most specific access-boundary and thus the most theologically loaded element of the tabernacle. What it separates, YHWH's specific dwelling-presence from the priests' regular service area, encodes the covenant's most fundamental theological tension: YHWH desires to dwell among his people (25:8), but his holiness makes unrestricted access fatal (verse 20: the priests who approach must consecrate themselves).
The veil is the covenant's material solution to this tension: YHWH present, access restricted, mediation required. Matthew 27:51's torn veil resolves what the veil maintained.
