Exodus 26:16 Commentary
The tabernacle frames' dimensions, ten cubits tall, one and a half cubits wide, create the sanctuary interior's defining proportions. The ten-cubit height (approximately fifteen feet) creates a sanctuary interior tall enough to stand in without question, even elevated by the frame's base-structure. The one-and-a-half cubit width at each frame, set side by side, creates the sanctuary walls through the accumulation of frame units. The consistent frame dimensions across all wall positions mean the sanctuary can be assembled in exact configuration every time, with no variation between positions or sides.
The frame dimensions connect to the tabernacle's internal furniture heights and proportions. The ark and mercy seat together are approximately two and a half cubits tall; the table of showbread is one and a half cubits tall; the incense altar is two cubits tall. Against the backdrop of ten-cubit frames, all the furniture is well within the visual field of a priest standing in the holy place. The proportional relationships between the furniture heights and the frame heights create the sanctuary interior's spatial experience: neither the furniture dwarfed by oversized walls nor the ceiling pressing down on oversize furniture.
The frame's golden overlay (verse 29) means that the tabernacle's wall structure is gold-covered wood: the interior walls of the sanctuary are gold-clad, creating the holy place's glittering golden interior that the priest encounters when entering through the linen inner curtain door. The gold of the ark, the table, the menorah, and the incense altar is consistent with the gold of the walls themselves: the holy place is a room in which every surface, every furnishing, every visible element is gold. Entering the holy place is entering a room of gold, which is entering the visible form of the presence of the divine king's dwelling.
