What Does Exodus 26:14 Mean?
Verse-by-verse commentary and theological analysis
Exodus 26:14 Commentary
The two additional outer coverings : Ram skins dyed red and tahash skins: complete the tabernacle's four-layer covering system. Ram skins dyed red (or reddened) provide weather-resistant hide covering as the third layer; tahash skins (the material of uncertain identification, possibly dugong, dolphin, or badger skins) provide the outermost practical protection. The four-layer system from inside to outside reads: linen-with-cherubim (spiritual reality), Goat-hair (practical service), red-ram-skins (weather protection), tahash-skins (outermost durability). Each layer serves a distinct function while covering the layers within it.
The tahash-skin outer covering is the tabernacle's most enigmatic material. Tahash (translated variously as badger, seal, dolphin, or sea cow skins) appears exclusively in the tabernacle contexts (13 occurrences). The material must be identifiable, available to the wilderness community, and durable enough for the outermost position in a structure that will be assembled, disassembled, and transported hundreds of times over forty years.
Whatever the tahash is, it is the wilderness tabernacle's most weather-resistant and durable material: the outer face of YHWH's dwelling as it travels through the desert is the community's best available outerwear material.
The four-layer covering system is the tabernacle's most vivid expression of the principle that YHWH's dwelling conceals its interior glory beneath an exterior that does not advertise it. From outside the wilderness camp, the tabernacle is an animal-skin tent. From outside the courtyard, it is a goat-hair tent. From inside the holy place, it is a cherubim-embroidered linen sanctuary. The same progressive revelation of the sacred's inner reality, from animal-skin practicality to golden-linen theological beauty, governs the relationship between the covenant's public face and its innermost reality in every generation of covenant community life.
