Exodus 26:1 Commentary

"Moreover, you shall make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine twined linen and blue and purple and scarlet yarns; you shall make them with cherubim skillfully worked into them." The tabernacle's fabric-structure instructions (chapter 26) are the most architecturally complex section of the wilderness sanctuary's construction narrative.

The ten inner curtains of fine twined linen, woven with the blue-purple-scarlet palette and embroidered cherubim, are the tabernacle's innermost wall-covering. The cherubim woven into these curtains are the visual program of the entire sanctuary interior: everywhere inside the tabernacle, the worshipper is surrounded by cherubim imagery: the same cherubim who guard Eden's tree of life (Genesis 3:24) and flank YHWH's throne above the ark.

The textile descriptions of chapter 26 are the most detailed construction specifications in the entire tabernacle section: precise measurements for curtain dimensions (28 x 4 cubits each), the number of curtains per set (five and five joined together), the loop-and-clasp joining system (fifty loops of blue and fifty golden clasps joining the two sets into one unified curtain), and the outer goats'-hair curtains that cover the inner linen set.

The precision of the specifications is the architectural principle's expression: the heavenly pattern must be reproduced exactly. Every cubit, every loop, every clasp in the earthly tabernacle corresponds to the divine original.

The tabernacle's layered covering structure, inner linen curtains, outer goats'-hair curtains, rams'-skin covering, and goatskin outer covering, is the protection-and-holiness system of the portable sanctuary. The innermost and most beautiful layer (cherubim-embroidered fine linen) is entirely hidden from outside view: only those who enter the sanctuary see the beauty within. The outer coverings are utilitarian protection against weather.

The Bezalel craftsmen create extraordinary beauty that most of Israel will never see: beauty for YHWH's own enjoyment, for the cherubim-throne-room's aesthetic, for the few who serve within. The hidden beauty of the tabernacle's interior is one of the deepest statements about worship as existing for YHWH rather than for the observer.
