Exodus 24:10 Commentary

The elders' vision of YHWH includes his standing-surface: "under his feet as it were a pavement of sapphire stone, like the very heaven for clearness." The sapphire floor beneath the divine throne-space is the theophany's most exquisite visual detail: not the fire and cloud that normally surround divine appearances but the crystalline clarity of the space immediately beneath the divine presence. The vision is notable for what it does not describe: the elders do not see YHWH's face or full form, only the space at his feet, rendered in the most jewel-like, sky-clear terms available.

The sapphire-clear floor image recurs in Ezekiel 1:22-26's chariot-vision and in Revelation 4:6's "sea of glass, like crystal." The canonical theophanies share a consistent visual vocabulary that the Sinai elders' vision begins: the divine presence surrounded by crystalline, jeweled clarity, the throne-room's floor as the interface between the divine and the human visual field. These repeated elements suggest a canonical consistency in how YHWH reveals his dwelling to human witnesses: never the full divine form, but the space, the surroundings, the material splendor of the divine environment.

The New Jerusalem's description in Revelation 21:18-21: crystal clear jasper walls, twelve foundation stones of precious gems, streets of pure gold like transparent glass: is the eschatological fulfillment of the Sinai sapphire-floor vision. What the elders glimpsed beneath YHWH's feet at the covenant ratification is what the covenant community will inhabit fully in the new creation: the crystalline-clear dwelling of the divine presence, now made the permanent home of the covenant people. The vision given at covenant-beginning is the template for the covenant's ultimate destination.
