What Does Exodus 16:24 Mean?

"See! The LORD has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Remain each of you in his place; let no one go out of his place on the seventh day." So the people rested on the seventh day. The "see! The LORD has given you the Sabbath" frames the Sabbath as a divine gift (natan, given) before it is a divine command: YHWH has given the Sabbath to Israel. The gift-form of the Sabbath precedes and grounds the commandment-form. The generous provision (twice as much on day six) makes the rest on day seven not only possible but luxurious: Israel rests with food already in hand.

"Let no one go out of his place on the seventh day": the spatial rest instruction (remain where you are) is the practical content of wilderness Sabbath: no gathering movement, no travel, no work-related departure from the household location. The "place" (tachtav, under himself) is the household's encampment location within the larger camp. Staying in place on the Sabbath is the physical embodiment of trusting that the provision already received is sufficient for the day of rest. Sabbath rest is first spatial before it is temporal.

"So the people rested on the seventh day": the first recorded national Sabbath rest. The community that could not rest under Pharaoh's labor demands (Exodus 5:4-5 explicitly: Pharaoh refused to give Israel rest) now rests together as YHWH's free people under his provision. The first Sabbath rest is the Exodus's most concrete freedom benefit: the liberated community finally rests. Sabbath and slavery are mutually exclusive: you can only truly Sabbath as a free person under a covenant God who provides.
