Exodus 13:18 Commentary

But God led the people around by the way of the wilderness toward the Red Sea. And the people of Israel went up out of the land of Egypt equipped for battle. The "way of the wilderness toward the Red Sea" is the route God chose: south through the wilderness of Sinai toward the body of water at its southern end (Hebrew: Yam Suf, the Sea of Reeds, traditionally identified with the Red Sea). The wilderness route is longer, exposed to greater deprivation (no food or water readily available), and militarily less convenient: but it leads to the formation experience at Sinai before the conquest challenge of Canaan.

"Equipped for battle" (Hebrew: chamushim, armed/organized in military order) is the surprising description of the departing Israel: despite verse 17's concern that they would flee at the sight of war, verse 18 describes them as militarily equipped. The tension is intentional: Israel departed Egypt armed and in military formation, but their spiritual formation for actual combat had not yet occurred.

They had the outward form (weapons, organization) without the inward readiness (faith tested by difficulty). The wilderness journey is the process by which the externally armed but internally un-formed people become the fighting force that will enter Canaan.

The "Red Sea" (Yam Suf) route is the path to the sea-crossing miracle that will define Israel's early communal consciousness. The Exodus from Egypt is not complete at Pharaoh's midnight release; it is completed at the sea when Israel walks through the waters and Pharaoh's army is drowned. The wilderness-toward-the-sea route is chosen precisely because it leads to the sea: the location of the final definitive demonstration of YHWH's deliverance and Egypt's defeat.
