Exodus 11:7 Commentary

"But not a Dog shall growl against any of the people of Israel, either man or beast, that you may know that the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel." The protection promise for Israel on the Passover night is stated in the most vivid contrast possible: while all Egypt cries, not even a dog will growl at an Israelite. The dog-growl exemption is the minimal level of disturbance: not death, not disease, not even a dog's bark at the passing of the death-angel. Israel is so completely exempt from the Passover judgment that the ambient nocturnal sounds of Egypt will not touch Israel's territory or Israel's people.

The dog-growl image may echo the exodus of Joseph's bones (Genesis 50:25) or the later "dogs of Egypt" imagery, but its primary function is illustrative: in contrast to Egypt's "great cry" (verse 6), Israel will experience not even the lowest audio detection of threat. The maximum sound in Egypt (unprecedented crying) versus the minimum possible sound in Israel (not even dog-growling) is the sharpest contrast the narrative can draw between the Passover night's experience of judgment and protection simultaneously in adjacent territories.

"That you may know that the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel" is the Passover night's stated knowledge-purpose. Throughout the plague sequence, YHWH stated knowledge-purposes addressed to Pharaoh, to Egypt, and to Israel. The Passover night's knowledge is for everyone: Israel will know it from the silence of their dogs while Egypt cries; Egypt will know it from the catastrophic distinction between their experience and Israel's.

The "distinction" (Hebrew: yafle, the same root as the Goshen-exemption verb in Exodus 8:22 and 9:4) is YHWH's permanent theological identity marker: he makes distinctions, and the Passover night is the final and clearest demonstration of that capacity.
