The Harvest of the Nations and the Face of the Father
The sixty-seventh psalm is a brief, powerful missional prayer that begins with the Aaronic blessing: "May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us." The setting is a desire for the divine "way" to be known on the earth and the "saving power" of God to be recognized among all nations. The atmosphere is one of global anticipation, where the "blessing" of the covenant people is not an end in itself, but a means to the "fear of God" reaching the "ends of the earth." It is a portrait of a world where the "peoples" are called to "be glad and sing for joy."
The narrative movement centers on the "equity of the King": "For you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth." The perspective shifts from the "light of the countenance" to the "increase of the earth." The psalmist notes that "the earth has yielded its increase; God, our God, shall bless us." This transition establishes a link between spiritual "blessing" and physical "abundance," showing that the "harvest" of the soil is a pointer to the "harvest" of the souls of men. The movement concludes with a repetitive refrain of praise—"Let all the peoples praise you!"—asserting that the ultimate "yield" of history is a world that acknowledges its Creator.
The theology of this psalm shows the relationship between "grace" and "guidance." It reveals that the "shining of the face" is the source of all global transformation, showing that God’s "way" is a path of "equity" and joy rather than just legalistic demand. The "harvest" represents the visible proof of the Father’s favor, a signal to the nations that "God, our God" is the source of all life. To "praise you" is shown to be the goal of every ethnic group, a unifying melody that overcomes the discord of national pride. It teaches us to move from the "insularity" of our own blessing to the "intent" of God’s global glory. Expansion is the byproduct of the Blessing.
The One whose "face" is the ultimate "light" that shines upon us and who is Himself the "Firstfruits" of the harvest of the nations is Jesus Christ. While we were wandering in the darkness of the nations, Christ came to be the "Saving Power" that reconciles the ends of the earth to the Father. This psalm reminds us that because Christ has already "yielded His life" for our sake, the whole world is now invited to "sing for joy" in the equity of His reign. We are invited to become the "vessels" of His blessing, trusting that the Son is the One who guides us into eternal abundance. Our harvest is His Holiness.
