Proverbs 22 Summary & Study Guide
Detailed chapter analysis, key themes, and theological insights
The Good Name
Proverbs 22 concludes the first Solomonic collection with an emphasis on "Reputation," "Training," and the "Ancient Boundaries." The setting is the social environment where a "good name" is more desirable than great riches and "favor" is better than silver or gold. It establishes that the "rich and the poor meet together," and the Lord is the "Maker of them all." This world is one where the "Prudent Man" sees danger and hides himself, while the simple go on and suffer for it.
The movement of the chapter focuses on the "Injunctions" for the next generation. It includes the famous command to "train up a child in the way he should go," so that even when he is old he will not depart from it. The narrative also warns against "removing the ancient landmark" that the fathers have set, emphasizing the continuity of truth across generations. The movement goes from the "Good Name" of the individual to the "Standing of the Skilled Man" before kings. It is a lesson in the long-term value of integrity and skill.
Theologically, the "Reward of Humility" and the fear of the Lord are riches, honor, and life. It teaches that the Lord "pleads the cause" of the poor and will "rob of life" those who rob them. This reveals God as the ultimate "Advocate for the Vulnerable." The "Words of the Wise" are presented as things that should be "kept within you" so that your "trust may be in the Lord." To "incline the ear" to these words is the path to a life of stability. Our honor is a result of His Advocacy.
Jesus Christ is the One with the "Good Name" that is above every name and whose "favor" is the only true wealth. Christ is the "Child" who was perfectly trained in the Father's way and who never departed from it, even to the Cross. While we were the "simple" who went on and suffered, He became the "Prudent One" who saw our danger and took the blow for us. This chapter reminds us that because our King "pleads our cause," we are secure forever. Our name is found in His Name.
