The Red Cord of Faith

Joshua 2 details the dangerous reconnaissance of Jericho by two spies sent by Joshua. Their survival depends entirely on the unexpected protection provided by Rahab, a prostitute living in the city wall. Rahab hides them from the king's messengers and confesses her faith in Israel's God, testifying that the inhabitants of the land are melting in fear because of what they heard of the Exodus and the defeat of the Amorite kings. This meeting proves that God already has witnesses and converts within the very strongholds that appear most impenetrable.

Rahab makes a covenant with the spies, securing safety for her family in exchange for her silence and the display of a scarlet cord in her window. This agreement transforms the symbol of her profession into a signal of salvation. The spies return to Joshua with a report that is the polar opposite of the report brought by the twelve spies forty years earlier, declaring that the Lord has surely given the whole land into their hands. This shift in perspective confirms that the new generation is operating from a position of faith rather than fear.

The radical inclusivity of grace and the power of confession are demonstrated through the protection of Rahab. Her inclusion in the genealogy of Jesus reveals that no past is too stained for the purposes of the Kingdom. The scarlet cord points toward the blood of the Passover lamb and the ultimate sacrifice of Christ, providing protection from the coming judgment. It teaches that true faith is not just an internal feeling but a risk-taking action that chooses the side of God over the systems of the world.

For us today, Joshua 2 is a call to look for Rahab moments in our own lives. It teaches us that God is often working in places and through people we might easily overlook or dismiss. As we reflect on the report of the spies, we are encouraged to base our expectations on God’s promises rather than the height of the walls before us. May we be a people who, like Rahab, have the courage to switch our allegiances, trusting that the scarlet cord of God’s mercy is strong enough to save us and our household from any storm.
