The Locust: Symbol of Devastation and Army

The locust is one of the most terrifying symbols of divine judgment and total economic desolation. Known for their ability to swarm in the billions and devour every green thing in their path, they represent a force that man is completely powerless to stop.

Locusts played a central role in the plagues of Egypt:

The plaque of locusts was so severe that it "covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened" (Exodus 10:15). This symbolizes how disobedience can lead to the total stripping away of God's physical and spiritual provision.

Despite their destructive nature, Solomon lists the locusts as one of the four "small but wise" things:

The locusts carry out their missions without a visible leader, yet they move with perfect coordination. This symbolizes the power of unity and order. For the believer, it is a reminder that when we move together in harmony with God's Spirit, we can accomplish tasks that would be impossible for an individual.
